In June 2024, the University of Pittsburgh commissioned Kimley-Horn to conduct an independent safety study of the De Soto/Terrace Street corridor as part of its commitment to ongoing, vital discussions and actions to help make Oakland a safer place for pedestrians, cyclists and commuters.
While the University does not own these streets, Pitt took the initiative to identify possible safety improvements and work in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI), UPMC and additional partners, on implementation. The City of Pittsburgh Vision Zero has already made updates, which include:
- Changing traffic signal timing at Terrace and Darragh intersection
- Implementing “No Turn On Red” at Terrace and Darragh intersection
- Adjusting traffic signals from flashing overnight to 24/7 Stop and Go (red, yellow, green signals)
- Repainting curb and pavement markings in no-parking areas and crosswalks (done by Pitt with DOMI approval)
- Enhancing lighting
These stakeholders will continue to work together in evaluating the corridor.
Safety Study Objective
- Assess pedestrian safety in this area
